What is MP3?

The MP3 format is a compression standard that reduces the space needed to store music while maintaining CD-quality audio.  Technically, MP3 is an abbreviation for MPEG Compression Level 3 (MPEG itself is an abbreviation of the Motion Pictures Expert Group).  But what MP3's really mean are the following:
