Depending
on the gear you have, MP3's can either be the coolest thing since CD's were
introduced almost 20 years ago -- or they can simply be a waste of your
time. In a perfect MP3 world, everyone would have the following: |
A Pentium or PowerPC level processor with
at least 16 megabytes of RAM (some of the earlier Pentium systems may
experience "choppy music")
Sound
card and speakers
A
fast
internet connection such as T1, T3, DSL, ISDN or cable modem (these
connections can download a typical song in less than a minute compared
to up to 30 minutes per song for 56K or slower modems)
Auxiliary
input into your computer (to
convert your CD collection into MP3's)
Large hard drive (each song takes up about 4
megabytes of space)
Recordable CD unit (CD-R or
CD-RW) to help expand
your storage capabiliity
FREE software to play your MP3's (try WinAmp for PC's, QuickTime4 for Apple and Xaudio for Unix/Linux)
