Changes in the Top 20 Search Engines List

April 24, 2002

Our top three choices remain the same: Overture is #1, Yahoo! is #2 and Google is #3. However, outside the top 3, we've made the largest changes ever here at SquirrelNet.

The biggest mover overall is the meta-search engine MetaCrawler, rising 13 places to #4. MetaCrawler is now our recommended search engine of last resort replacing AltaVista (which falls 10 places to #18).

Two meta-search engines have been added to the list: ixQuick debuts at #8 with AllTheWeb at #9. Exiting the top 20 are DogPile and Looksmart, two search engines that now mirror other search engines rather than adding any unique value.

DirectHit has been relaunched as Teoma (#13). A fuller review of this engine is pending.
